Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him, \u201cBefore the cock crows twice\u00a0you will deny me three times.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Peter broke down\u2026and wept.<\/p>\n<p>That prior evening as the Apostles gathered for what would be their final Passover meal together,<br \/>\nPeter felt strong, secure and confident gathered with Jesus and the other apostles. Peter, with all\u00a0sincerity offered to give his life for Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>But just a few short hours later\u2026 all hell was breaking loose.<\/p>\n<p>Peter must have been shaken that Jesus did not resist arrest, and now his once powerful \u00a0Master<br \/>\nsuffered abuse as he was spit on and mocked by the Temple guards. Peter was later alone and\u00a0separated from his fellow apostles. His beloved leader was no longer preaching, performing\u00a0spectacular miracles like raising Lazarus from the dead\u2026but facing the horror of Roman\u00a0crucifixion. Peter was traumatized by these events and feared for his life. In that fear and\u00a0isolation he denied the one he pledged to defend and protect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-85\" src=\"https:\/\/menandabortion.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Last_Supper_Burke-240x192.jpg\" alt=\"The Last Supper\" width=\"250\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/menandabortion.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Last_Supper_Burke-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/menandabortion.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Last_Supper_Burke.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>It is a sign of the validity of the Gospel accounts that any political movement or religion would\u00a0have one of its key foundational leaders presented in such an unflattering light. Peter as leader\u00a0of the Christian Church must have approved of such a depiction of his betrayal. No doubt it was\u00a0the fruit of his tearful repentance, humility and later his post-resurrection restoration by Jesus as\u00a0leader of the early Christian Church. (John 21, 15-19)<\/p>\n<p>What a consolation to us in our moments of fear and weakness when in various ways, we abort\u00a0God\u2019s will for our lives. I think of those that are involved in abortion decisions. We know that\u00a0some of these men and women prior to the abortion would consider themselves to be pro life, or\u00a0at least were formed with these values in their families. However in the fear, anger and\u00a0uncertainty of an unplanned and life changing pregnancy, like Peter they can give in to those\u00a0fears and deny the truth. They deny their unborn son\/daughter who bears the imprint of the\u00a0Creator.<\/p>\n<p>This denial also leads to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silentnomoreawareness.org\/testimonies\/video-testimonies.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">bitter tears and much heartache<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liberating Repentance<\/strong><br \/>\nPope Benedict XVI wrote of the example of Peter and his words have a special significance for\u00a0men who have participated in any way in an abortion decision:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The school of faith is not a triumphal march but a journey marked daily by suffering and love, trials and faithfulness. Peter, who promised absolute fidelity, knew the bitterness and humiliation of denial: the arrogant man learns the costly lesson of humility. Peter, too, must learn that he is weak and in need of forgiveness. Once his attitude changes and he understands the truth&#8230;he weeps in&#8230;liberating\u00a0repentance&#8230;he is finally ready for his mission. \u2014 Benedict XVI<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the Good News for all who have participated in the death of an unborn child\u2026but in a\u00a0special way this speaks to fathers. Like many men, Peter wanted to be strong and do the right\u00a0thing, but in a time of fear and weakness he failed. Peter is chastened and humbled by his fall\u00a0and after repentance and restoration now understands that he cannot rely on his own strength, but\u00a0in the power of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>It is challenging for men to put aside their pride and admit they failed to protect their unborn\u00a0child from death. But the Lord waits for them with mercy and forgiveness. Jesus will not\u00a0condemn them for their sin, but rather give them the grace of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silentnomoreawareness.org\/search\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">grieving their loss in liberating\u00a0repentance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the healing of this loss men will in time discover another gift\u2026their unique vocation in the\u00a0Body of Christ.<\/p>\n<p>What a great blessing it will be for our families, Churches and nation when the millions of men\u00a0involved in abortion decisions turn to Christ for healing and restoration.
